Independence Day is a national holiday in the Philippines observed annually on June 12, commemorating the declaration of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. Since 1978, it has been the country's National Day. Then President Diosdado Macapagal moved the celebration to June 12 in order to commemorate Emilio Aguinaldo's original proclamation of Philippine independence from Spain on the same date in 1898. The first official Philippine flag, which symbolizes the country’s independence, was likewise designed by General Emilio Aguinaldo. This celebration pays tribute to all the people who have sacrificed to get our motherland free from Spanish, U.S., and Japanese colonial and imperial rule.

The Philippines, the name of which comes from the King of Spain, was under Spanish rule for 333 years, also under the U.S. for a further 48 years and finally under the Japanese rule for a few couple of years until the end of World War II. This period in history has led the Philippines to have many cultural affinities with the West.

On this historic occasion, the government urges the public to remember that freedom is a precious gift that comes with great responsibilities. At Hemo Lab Philippines, it is about “freeing” the people from the bondage of disease and other health concerns through the provision of affordable and high-quality laboratory services and other healthcare services to the people of Taytay and Rizal province as a whole.
